Truffaut's unique sensibility finally came into focus as the New Wave faded
This film was made during Truffaut's early transition from the rebellious, experimental style of the French New Wave toward more conventional filmmaking. It actually helps you better understand Truffaut as an individual auteur rather than just one of the “New Wave pioneers.” The New Wave is about attitude expressed through form, and that often takes the spotlight in film criticism, overshadowing an auteur’s more idiosyncratic merits. For Truffaut, I would say it’s his extremely sensitive and intimate touch on subtle human feelings, emotions, and states of mind.
Every time I hear Truffaut’s off-screen narration, I feel an instant force pulling me close to the character’s inner world. That intimate connection between the audience and the characters is a gift you can only find in a Truffaut film.
